Another very
successful event!
Blessed by warm
sunny weather, great food, Black Thunder and Li’l Miss G (Sarah Garrett)
from Chiltern FM, who joined the off-road ride and spent several minutes
describing her experience on the Breakfast Show th morning.
Everyone had a great time, and many riders broke their own personal
distance records (19 completing 100 miles, and 41 completing 50 miles).
The off-road ride, held for the first time this year, was especially
popular, and is likely to be repeated in the future.
Amongst the 175
riders taking part we had
Ø
Babies in back carriers
and 5 year olds riding their own bikes
Ø
Cyclists from distant
parts of the country
Ø
Someone who was in
training for an Ironman event
Special mention must be made of Miss Morrell and Elise Spiers who both
completed the 13 mile off-road route on horseback. This was another
“first” for the event, and they should be congratulated.
Money
raised for Children in Belize:
The response
this year has been particularly generous. The income from registrations
and sponsorship, along with spontaneous donations from members of the
public, raised in excess of £7000. This is a new record for this event.
Thanks to
everyone for their support!

Kimbolton Charity Cycle Ride 2005
What an
exhilarating day for both school and community! With perfect weather for
cycling, 193 riders registered and set off on one of the many routes
provided, ranging from 3 mile circuits of the Castle parkland, to
10, 25, 50 and 100 miles through quiet country lanes. The longer
distance riders actually cycled through 4 counties on the day!
The variety of
routes attracted families with small children (sometimes with a baby in
a bucket seat on the back!), hardened club riders and super-fit athletes
who made riding 100 miles look like a “walk in the park”. One of our
parents at the school, Dr Irwin, actually added a 10 mile run (yes, on
foot!) at the end of his 100 mile bike ride. I’m not sure this is a
trend we really want to encourage for the future, but we were sincerely impressed!
The team of
volunteers behind the event has been enormous this year. Parents and
friends from the community helped generously in a variety of capacities:
registration, feeding stations, baking cakes, medical back-up, breakdown
service and much, much more. But a special vote of thanks must go to the
central ride committee, so dynamically led by Teresa Ferland, and
supported indefatigably by Fiona Williams, Jenny Burns, Andy Crawshaw
and Dec Downey. Furthermore, two people who gave up so much of their
time (especially their own biking time on the day) were Mark and
Elisabeth Ferland, who were pillars in helping to make it happen.
Money raised
for the Children in Belize Appeal:
We have hit a
new record of over £6000! Thank you to all our supporters.

Kimbolton Charity Cycle Ride 2004
This was the
second year of this increasingly popular event. Last year we fielded 25
riders, this year it was 76, of whom 28 were pupils from Kimbolton
School ( 8 from the Prep Department and 20 from the Main School). As
well as the 25-100 mile route on the highways, we established a
traffic-free route around the Castle Estates for families with young
children, with a feeding station groaning with cakes and chocolate that
provided constant incentives to ride another lap! (I believe two of the
Headmaster’s children, Danni and James, completed seven laps of the
Estate, totalling 21 miles and several chocolate chip cookies and
sandwiches!).
Sponsorship
money? We surpassed our initial target of £5000. The enthusiasm to raise
sponsorship and increase donations was greatly enhanced by the donation
of two magnificent Saracen Vice bicycles (kindly donated by Paul & Liz
Fenney, and John & Clare Martin). One was offered as a prize in a draw
for those who raised at least £100. The draw took place at Kimbolton
School on July 5th and the winner was Vicki Thomas, a 6th
Form pupil in the school. Here she is pictured, along with some friends,
receiving the bicycle the morning after their farewell summer ball on
the last day of term! (Vicki completed 50 miles on a tandem along with
Gemma Buckley, who is standing to the left of Vicki). The second bicycle
was won in a separate event at Buckden Towers by one of the
parishioners.
Events like
these always throw up lots of interesting statistics, and the greatest
satisfaction comes from not simply seeing people ride long distances,
but especially seeing riders break their own personal records. Not only
did several ride 100 miles for the first time in their lives, but also
many achieved new personal goals of 25, 50 and 85 miles.
Our youngest
rider, Henry Farrer ( 5 years) rode 6 miles, and our oldest riders (in
their 60s) achieved 100 miles. Here is a list of riders with their
achievements:

None of this
could have happened without the support of an enormous and dedicated
army of helpers at feeding stations, the registration tent, breakdown
and technical support, and much more. Special thanks go to: Freya and
Mrs Freestone, Asha and Dr Aggarwal, Anne Hughes and Liesbeth Sant,
Teresa Ferland and Sue Hook, the Campbell and Rose families, Fiona
Williams and Jenny Burns (both of whom spent the whole day at basecamp
organising everything!). We also appreciated important further support
from Mr Tony Claridge, Mr Keith Elsom, Mrs Debby Clark, Miss Hughes, Mr
Bennett, Mrs Vincent-Bennett, Mr Rob Wilson and Mr French.

Successfully
completed!
Total distance actually
covered by all the cyclists as a team: 1,675 miles!
What started out as a good
idea for only three colleagues on Kimbolton School Staff, eventually
mushroomed into a full-blown public event that attracted the attention
of a lot of people. We put together a team of 23 cyclists, nine of whom
were members of staff, two were former pupils and one a current pupil of
the School. The rest of the team was made up of enthusiastic parents and
friends. Some were experienced club riders, others rode bikes as a
hobby, but many were breaking new ground by entering such an event.
Several were amazed at the mileage they finally covered and, before
departing homewards, were talking about next year’s event and what they
were going to achieve!
Sunday September 21st
dawned with great promise. The route was to take us from the undulating
west side of Cambridgeshire, across the southern fens, skirting north
Bedfordshire, and back into Kimbolton. The total distance was exactly
100 miles, and 14 of the 23 riders anticipated completing the entire
course (12 of whom succeeded!), others aiming to complete 25 or 50
miles. Let me reveal their identities!
25 milers: John Greening,
Ian Stokes, Jonathan Belbin, Simon Campbell-Butcher and Fiona Brown
50 milers: Bill Skinner,
Matthew Cook, Gareth Williams and John Norton
75 milers: Mark Thompson
and Paul Clark
100 milers: Terry Cooke,
Richard Williams, Wayne Bennett, Joe Cox, James White, Richard Jolley,
Liz Whitaker, David Irwin, Peter Cook, Philip Elliott, Carl Jones and
Frank Burns.
As fit and enthusiastic as
these riders were, they could never have completed the distances without
the support of an army of helpers at checkpoints and feeding stations.
We owe a debt of gratitude to the following families for their enormous
generosity: Freestones (Gt Gidding,) Aggarwals (Bury), John & Clare
Martin (Cottenham), Hodkinsons (Eaton Socon), Patels & Rigbys (Grafham),
Ferlands (Kimbolton), and Fiona Williams and Jenny Burns at “base camp”
outside Kimbolton Castle.
The money raised on this
event was just under £2000 . The amazing generosity has been due
entirely to the parent body and pupils of Kimbolton School and, on
behalf of the Children in Belize Appeal, I would like to express
our deep gratitude to everyone who has supported us.
